The quote is spoken by John Keaton in his first English class at Welton Academy. Award-winning actor Robin Williams who played the role of “ John Keating,” took it upon himself to serve as an inspiration to his students. The quote was said in a bid to motivate the students to live their best life.

The word “Carpe Diem” was not invented by Mr. Keating. It is a Latin word that comes from the poet Horace’s “Odes.” The “seize the day” line which is the motto of the class was also used as the theme of the film.
